A Separate Peace by John Knowles

Synopsis

Gene Forrester returns to his old school in England, and as he revisits a certain tree and a certain marble staircase, his teenaged memories during World War II return to him. He recalls his athletic best friend, Finny, and their “gypsy summer” when they were carefree and took turns jumping into the river from the tree. He remembers his athletic friend breaking his leg during one of the jumps in this novel that dips into the inner workings of the mind.
